On Monday, Valve announced that Left 4 Dead 2’s first add-on is in development and set to be released in early 2010. Titled “The Passing,” it has been announced to include – in addition to a new co-op campaign – new maps for Survival, Versus and Scavenge mode, and introduce a new co-operative challenge mode of play. It will also include a new uncommon common zombie, a melee weapon, and a firearm.

The most shocking news about this add-on is the fact that the survivors from the first Left 4 Dead game are going to be meeting up with the current survivors. No word yet on if they’ll be playable or not.

How do Left 4 Dead owners and Left 4 Dead 2 boycotters feel about this? I myself enjoy both games immensely, but I feel a bit betrayed that the original survivors are going to be in this new add-on. I feel that each group was meant for their respective games, and combining them like this is just irritating that metaphoric beehive.

What are your thoughts?

There are two different ways people are looking at DLC for single player experiences. Adding more to a game they already love or paying for content that should have been included with the release of the game. Even if it is DLC that does add more to a game you love is it worth it? Today the appearance of paid launch day DLC seems more and more common. To me that means two things happened. One they took away time from polishing the game to come up with the DLC and two they are charging you for something that should have been included on the disc. We will now take a look at DLC for games in different genres

Fallout 3

Let’s get one thing out of the way I love Fallout 3. I spent about 70 or so hours in the original game so when it came time for DLC I was excited. Granted most of it was not worth the time or money but I think Point Lookout is a great example of how DLC for RPGs should be handled. Buying all the DLC is not worth it to me as it brings total spending on that game to $110 dollars. Those who waited for the GOTY edition are definitely getting a deal.

Forza

I’d say the car packs are not worth the money but the tracks definitely are. In a simulation based racing game, a track can be very different depending on the car you are trying to tackle it with. There’s not much to complain here but I think it goes with the genre. It’s like sport games a little roster update is all you need.

Grand Theft Auto 4

The mother of all DLCs. I think this is a perfect example of how DLC should be done in general. The only thing I don’t like is that the additional content cannot integrate with the main game but I think this was more a technical limitation. When I say it’s a perfect example, I’m just talking about the amount of content not the quality because that is debatable.

Resident Evil 5

Versus mode is to me one of the most blatant examples of content that should have been included on the disc. It only 2MB which means it probably was already on the disc it just need to be unlocked with the download. This is just a way to squeeze an extra $3 dollars off of content that is already on the disc.

Street Fighter IV

This is the most blatant example of content that should have been included on the disc. Content in most fighting games is low as it is. DLC for fighting games should be new arenas, fighters, & modes. Not more costumes these should be unlockable once you beat the game with the character in question. This is just a way to squeeze another $20 (If purchased separately) or $12.50 off of content that should have been in the game.

I know there’s a lot more to cover when talking about DLC, like the famous horse armor, but I think you can get the gist of what I’m saying. What do you think about DLC “children”?
