All of this is essentially a bit of background knowledge for the news that today a player on Planet Calypso broke previous records and bought “The Most Expensive Virtual Object” ever – a space station which was auctioned off at $330,000 USD. While this might sound ludicrous on the face of it, the buyer himself seems optimistic that he will recoup his spending fairly quickly:

“This is a stunning investment opportunity, and I have complete faith I will recover what I spent relatively quickly. To say Planet Calypso has changed my life would be an understatement. I have even found the love of my life in the game, and now we live together in real life. I feel very confident about purchasing the Crystal Palace Space Station as I have already invested years of time, dedication, work, hope and love.”

This being an official press release, he then goes on to suck up to the developers and the game itself, but the message is clear. People are apparently willing to spend upwards of $300,000 on essentially thin air, and that’s a pretty scary fact.

10. Free Realms

Yes, in general, Free Realms is catered towards kids. The cartoony artstyle, the emphasis on minigames and the completely optional combat all make that point the more clearer. However, there is one thing that many of the subscription based models miss out on the Free Realms nails right on the head: accessibility. The ability to hop in and out of the game, play for 15-30 minutes and feel like you’ve actually accomplished something is extremely hard to achieve and Free Realms does it to a certain point. Since almost anything you do contributes experience to leveling up. If your looking for something different than the usual level grind and for a more social experience, Free Realms is where you should go.

9. Runes of Magic

Runes of Magic is your standard fare Fantasy MMORPG in the same mold of World of Warcraft. Everything from the general art direction to the UI layout screams WoW, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing if you can’t afford to play WoW anymore and need to move to something free. Not everything in Runes of Magic are the same as WoW – a dual class system, player housing, and the ability to specialize in multiple crafting systems without penalty to another are some of the features that many players wish would be implemented in WoW.

8. Perfect World

Perfect World is another MMORPG that is modeled after WoW with a few key differences. The two main different include a heavy influence of Chinese Mythology and an extensive PvP system that is up there with the big boys. Large clan and territory battles, PvP instances and PvP arenas are some of the highlights of this game that also features flight – something introduced prior to the Aion launch.

7. Dragonica

Dragonica is a arcade style, 3D side scrolling MMORPG. The game features a unique keyboard control scheme and a combo system that rewards players for learning to intricacies of their characters skills and abilities separates this game from the rest of the free to play games out there. A fun, anime art style and an injection of humor also make this game a bit different from the rest.

6. Fiesta Online

The first thing you’ll notice about Fiesta Online is it’s extremely bright and colorful palette and art style. Whereas most games tend to feature a lot of earth tones, Fiesta is as bright as the Vegas Strip at the night. Fiesta is very party centric and features some additions such as a marriage system and Kingdom Quests which are group quests for 10-15 people at a time.

5. Atlantica

I’ll come out and say this right now: Atlantica is definitely NOT for everyone. Even with the localization, there are grammar and spelling errors, there is almost no tutorial to get you into the intricacies of the game, and it all feels very foreign. If your looking for a tactical turn-based MMORPG, Atlantica is where you should look. Once you push past the overwhelming first few levels, the unique party system and turn based combat will suck you in and grab hold.

4. RF Online

RF Online separates itself from the rest of the MMORPG group by offering a sci-fi universe to play in rather than a fantasy setting. The game offers 3 unique races to play as, one of which happens to be a race of robots. As we’ve all learned from Transformers and Gundam, robots are awesome. The game also features a progression system for guns as well as a decent PvP offering.

3. Requiem

Requiem labels itself as a “horror MMORPG” that is catered to a mature audience. The combat is visceral and gory with no lack of blood from each battle. Beast possession powers and a wide variety of weapon types and specialization accent the dark, gloomy setting of the game. If your looking for a game that has taken a new approach at the MMO genre, give Requiem a try.

2. Mabinogi

Mabinogi labels itself a second generation MMO and the approach the developers took is definitely a change from what many of us are used to. The NPCs remember the players and build relationships based on the type of conversations that were held earlier, offers true-to-life experience with your character because of an extensive control system and a unique aging system, where your character grows 1 year older every week definitely make this game something you have to try at least once.

1. Dungeons and Dragons Online

Formerly a subscription based game, Dungeon and Dragons Online has moved into the free genre recently (and with much anticipation, as the servers could barely hold all of the players when the switch was made). DDO has all of the features you would expect from a subscription based game for none of the price and was labeled as the best free to play MMORPG on a multitude of sites. The amount of polish, along with a fantastic combat system and large userbase, makes it hard for other MMOs to compete.

The Final Fantasy XI Ultimate Collection, which includes all four expansion packs and the three add-in scenarios released, will be going on sale tomorrow on Steam for the low low price of $11. It doesn’t waive any of the monthly fees but for $11 any MMORPG fan should give the game a shot. The sale only lasts until the 3rd so pick it up while you can.

But don’t worry, if the players don’t like it or they demand more, Jack Emmert of Cryptic Studios mentioned that he wants Cryptic Studios to be as “agile as a company and respond to what the customers want.” I really hope that they try to keep up for this, because I believe a Denobulan should be playable, but only by me. And I want millions of dollars and my own personal fleet. I kid – I hope this strategy works out for them, because ignoring certain player classes is what other companies excel at.

Those who apply need to have a Square Enix ID, be 18 years or older, presumably have a fairly powerful computer to run the software on and be fluent in Japanese, French, German or English for purposes of reporting bugs.

Whether it’s called a “Boutique” or just a shop, they all boil down to about the same thing: a simple system that involves you either using your credit card or going to a retail store and buying a gift card to redeem your gold, silver or credits. These various units of money can be traded for items in the shop that are otherwise unavailable throughout the game.

This system is a very effective way for developers to make money off of an otherwise free game. In an optimistic perspective, this helps the game to improve on a regular basis and allows for more constant updates. On the other hand, it’s always a little disappointing to see certain people with either a nice, shiny creature to ride on that you’ll never obtain, or someone that’s beating you to death with a weapon that’s stats are simply unmatched by anything else.

Unfortunately, these shops do tend to tip the balance to the people who have more money. Considering that many people feel opposed to the idea of dedicating money to an online RPG, this can make more than half of the MMO’s out there frustrating for the “cheap” player. This is why there needs to always be a balance between the items in the cash shop, and the items in the stock game. This way, even if you don’t want to, or can’t, pay for the items in the shop, the game is still fair and enjoyable.

Sony is more or less trying to merge its player base into a select number of server, due to the low population base.

I have a feeling this will be the beginning of a wave of server shutdowns/population decrease of the (mostly dead) Star Wars game. With the release of Star Wars: The Old Republic on the horizon, SOE will try to hold on to their customers as long as they can, but SW:TOR will most likely kill SWG.

The game developer is NCsoft’s Aion Team Development Dept, a major Korean game developer. Aion combines PvP and PvE (a concept the developers call PvPvE) in a fantasy game environment. A feature of the game is flight, which is mainly used as a means for combat. Other games in this genre typically offer flight only as a means of travel, while combat stays on the ground. The Basics:

Races/factions

There are three factions in Aion: Elyosof Elysea, Asmodiansof Asmodae, and Balaurof the Abyss. All three continents are contained in the world of Atreia, connected by the Tower of Eternity, and overlooked upon by Aion(aka God). The Elyos and Asmodians are playable races. The Elyos is a tad lighter and the Asmodians are a bit darker, though neither side is truly evil or an extreme. Balaur are the dark ones; an NPC race of dragon-like demons bent on the domination of Atreia.

This is basically the Alliance and the Horde, and… I would guess the dragon aspects. The main difference between the conflict in Aion and the conflict in WoW is the Aion revolves around the conflict, and is more or less the forefront of the experience. So if you do not enjoy PvP, then Aion may not be the game for you.

Classes

There are four basic Classes that the game starts with, which are the Warrior, Scout, Mage, and Priest. After you “Ascend” in the game, (which is the completion of the starting areas) which is at level 10, you can choose a more in-depth character class, which better define your role in the game.

Templar (like Protection Paladins or Protection Warriors) – Basic Sword ‘n Board tanking class.

Gladiator (like Fury/Arms Warriors) — More offensive and brutal version of the Templar, minimal tanking skills, but devastating weapon skills.

Assassin (like Rogues) – Stealthy, Dual-Wielding, very quick and efficient.

Ranger (like Hunters) – No pet, but has very nice ranged skills and traps, great for soloing.

Sorcerer(like Mages) – Tons of nuking skills, some CC, and more nuking skills.

Spiritmaster (like Warlocks) – The summoner of the classes, has a summon for many situations.

Cleric (like Priests) – Healer, great healer.

Chanter (like Druids) – Not a shape-shifter, but definitely retained hybrid spirit.

These are rough comparisons and descriptions but they should give you a good idea of the roles each class fills in the game.

LucasArts has stated that the testing will not be as easy as the signups. “Testing will be an ongoing process, and spots are limited, so people need to sign up early to give them the best possible chance of getting selected,” said the publisher.
